Israel Delays Gaza Medical Evacuations
The organization said the evacuation, which was supposed to take place on Wednesday through the Rafah land crossing, was postponed following the sudden cancellation. A spokesperson explained that they were informed of the decision by international health officials, who did not provide any explanation for the move.
He said medical and emergency teams had been fully ready to transfer patients from Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza. However, the operation could not proceed due to the last-minute withdrawal of coordination.
The spokesperson added that the Red Crescent is waiting for coordination to resume, expressing hope that the evacuation of the third group of patients and injured people can take place on Thursday, given the severe humanitarian and medical conditions inside the Gaza Strip.
Official figures from Gaza indicate that approximately 22,000 wounded and ill individuals are seeking to leave the enclave to receive medical treatment abroad, as the healthcare system has collapsed amid Israel’s genocidal war.
Israel reopened the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing on Monday in a limited capacity and under strict conditions, after occupying the crossing since May 2024.
According to reports, around 50 Palestinians are expected to cross daily into Gaza and a similar number into Egypt, including patients and their companions, although this has not yet been implemented as planned.
Since the reopening earlier this week, 52 Palestinians have entered Gaza, while 60 people have exited the territory through the border crossing.
Semi-official Palestinian figures also show that nearly 80,000 people have registered to return to Gaza, underscoring Palestinians’ continued rejection of displacement and their determination to uphold their right of return despite the widespread destruction across the enclave.
