Iran Claims Victory Over U.S. by Curbing Anti-Government Protests

(MENAFN) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Islamic Republic's supreme leader, declared Iran has defeated the United States by suppressing violent demonstrations that engulfed the nation.

Mass protests ignited across Iran in late December, initially triggered by soaring inflation and widespread economic hardship, but rapidly transformed into sweeping anti-government upheaval marked by violent confrontations that claimed hundreds of lives—both among security personnel and demonstrators.

This week, however, Tehran authorities announced they had restored order, with major urban centers returning to stability.

In multiple Saturday posts on X, Khamenei accused the US and Israel of engineering the turmoil, identifying Washington as the primary architect behind the unrest.

"The US had made extensive preparations to orchestrate this sedition. This sedition was a prelude to even bigger schemes. The Iranian nation defeated the US," he wrote.

Donald Trump "himself was involved in the sedition," the supreme leader insisted, citing the American president's pledge to protesters that "help is on its way" and Washington's deployment of naval vessels to the Middle East region.

Media reported Wednesday that an American military strike against Iran appeared "imminent." The assault never materialized, with Trump later explaining he aborted the operation after learning Tehran had abandoned plans to execute more violent demonstrators arrested during the chaos.

"Yes, we extinguished the fire of the sedition, but that isn't enough. The US must be held accountable," Khamenei insisted.

Tehran authorities "do not intend to lead the country toward war. However, we will not just let go of the criminals" both inside and outside Iran, he added.

In a separate media report, a senior Iranian official disclosed that Tehran had cautioned neighboring states it might strike American military installations throughout the Middle East should Washington execute threatened attacks on the Islamic Republic.

According to the supreme leader, "agents" of the US and Israel "murdered several thousand people" during the riots. They "vandalized" 250 mosques and more than 250 educational institutions, while also damaging the power grid and healthcare facilities, he said.
