Syria’s FM phones Ahmed al-Ahmed, hero of Bondi Beach shooting

(MENAFN) Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani spoke by phone on Wednesday with Ahmed al-Ahmed, the Syrian-Australian who bravely disarmed a gunman during a deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, according to reports.

During the conversation, Shaibani conveyed that President Ahmad al-Sharaa had asked him to check on Ahmed’s well-being and send his get-well wishes. Ahmed expressed his gratitude to both the president and the foreign minister for their concern, as shown in a video of the call received by reports.

Speaking to the minister, Ahmed said: “In the near future, I will come back to my country and see those beautiful, heroic faces that removed injustice and ended oppression against the people.”

Videos captured Ahmed, a 43-year-old from al-Nayrab village in Syria’s Idlib governorate, confronting the shooter during the attack that killed 15 people and injured 42 others at Bondi Beach. Ahmed, who holds Australian citizenship, reportedly sustained five gunshot wounds to his arm and shoulder and was treated at St. George Hospital in southern Sydney.

He has been widely hailed as a hero by officials in Australia, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, as well as by US President Donald Trump, according to reports.
